[Australia & N.Z. Cable Association.] SPLENDID SPECTACLES. MELBOURNE, August 2. Three hundred thousand people hued the Esplanade at St Hilda to witness a special fireworks display on Saturday night in honour of the American Fleet. Features of a series of magnificent spectacles were a representation ol the flagship “Seattle” in a Hashing picture sixty-three loot long and Ihiity feet high; a field representation of ’Niagara Falls; a iorost lire, ami a set piece depicting Australia’s welcome to the Hoot. The whole formed the greatest display of the kind in the history of Melbourne. WEEK-END AMUSEMENTS. # SYDNEY, August 2. The Fleet spent the week-end in a series of excursions to pleasure resorts, base-hall games, and a football exhibition match between teams from the Idaho and the Colorado with a searchlight display on Saturday night.
A USTR APIA’S WE I .COM E. MELBOURNE, August 2. Air Bruce, Prime -Minister, states he has taken steps to inform the American press in connection with the untrue nature of a canard regarding Australia’s welcome to the fleet.
