The Westland Acolimatisatlilun Society is having culling operations carried out in connection with the deer herds in South Westland. The work is being performed by Mr C*. Hodgkinsnn. ranger, of llawea Flat. Otago, who is an experienced stalker, and has performed similar services for the Society before. The ranger has authority to kill up to 700 head of deer to exhaust the money available (including the Government subsidy) for the purpose. The tally of deer killed is checked by the jaws being taken to the police constable at Pembroke who issues a certificate as to the number. .Mr Hodgkinson in an interim report states he has killed about half his quota and hopes to finish the ending before the eml of October. He is to work principally in the Wills Valiev for the remainder of his tally. He states the calling was very necessary and will result in a great improvement to the herd. Deer are very plentiful on the Otago side where culling up to about 201)0 head per year takes place but even this clearance seems to make little difference to the countless numbers of deer on the other side of the ranges. Hodgkinson considers that South Westland presents the finest deer forest in the world and considers the Society .should do its liest to keep it clear of all types of bad heads. The present culling will have a good effect and it will he followed up next year with like extensive operations. No cold is “NAZOL” proof. A Wellington correspondent says some misconception appears to exist as to the intention of the Government in regard to the increase in the oldage pensions foreshadowed in the Budget. The Minister of Pensions, Hon G. J. Anderson, explained that the effect of the proposal is to establish a minimum of 17s (id a week to till who were previously entitled to 15s. Glider the present law an .old-age 1 etisioner received 15s per week if he had not more than £52 per year in cash and possessed a house m which lie lived worth not more than £520. Glider the new legislation this pensioner would receive the 2s (id per week more, making a total of bs Gd. If a pensioner at present had nothing more than £(i 10s per year or £25 in rash or projiertv he received bs 6d per week. This man would not receive mere than 17s (id per week. Those who at present, were in receipt of loss than 15s [er week pension, their incoma being more than would entitle them to lull pension, would receive an increase proportionate to 2s Gd or 15s.
