■CHILDREN’S DEMONSTRATION SYDNEY, Julv 27.

Ten thousand school children participated in a children’s demonstration to-day in honour of the American licet on the Sydney cricket ground, and gave exhibitions of folk dancing. One train, crowded with children taking part, crashed into a dead end at the Central Railway Station and throw the passengers into heaps on the floors of the carriages, hut onlyone teacher and three children were injured, all slightly.

CHRISTCHURCH PRECAUTIONS CHRISTCHURCH, July 27.

In view of the disastrous results of the collapse of a verandah during the procession of the men of the American licet in .Melbourne, the Christchurch City Council and those responsible for the reception of the sailors on their arrival in Christchurch, have decided to prepare against such an accident occurring here. As" yet, the route to be taken by the procession of the sailors in the city has not been definitely decided, lint, when it has been chosen, the City Fnginccr will inspect the verandahs on either side ol the streets through which the men will march, and, where necessary, will have them sufficiently strengthened to carry any weight which might be placed upon them..

PRIVATE ENTERTAINMENT. SYDNEY, J.ulv 28. After the first hectic rush the members of the fleet are beginning to visit the .suburbs. Many private families are now entertaining the men at their homes and a number of similar offers have been received from country homesteads. BEYOND ALL EXPECTATIONS. (Received this da.Y at 8 a.m.) SYDNEY. July 27. Admiral. Count sc in a statement said the welcome had been beyond aW expectations. Everything was so well conceived in the way of entertainments that all members of the fleet Were delighted with hospitality they met. which showed the unequivocal friendship of Australia towards the United States. They thanked Australia for it. The Elect repeated the searchlight display on Sunday night although there was mi mention of it in the official programme. Over one hundred thousand visited the ships on Soundin' afternoon and in title crush to get aboard there were thirty-live minor accidents. The men were entertained to-day at picnics, motor excursions, baseball and dancing. OFFICERS ENTERTAIXED. SYDNEY. July 27. The Lord Mayor tendered the Admirals and officers of the licet a ball at- the Town Hall. There was a large number of guests' and the function was successfully carried through.
