BUTTER SHORT.

STRONG DEMAND PROM BRITAIN. AITKI.ANI). July -0. The price* of butter was advanced on the Wellington market yesterday by one penny a pound, making the net wholesale rate lor lirst grade butter | s pj|. Parlors making tor this increase* were explained by the secretary of Auckland Rutter Pactories Committee, Mr W. A. Leonard. lie said the, reason was to lie found in the shortage of available -tucks for supplying the local market, and very attractive oilers were now being received from Loudon for the purchase of all butter in store, and for outputs up to the end ot December. Several transactions had taken place within the last week, when factory outputs had been disposed of for several months ahead at Is id. Offers at I' 7 1 1 were now being made, but most factories were holding tor a lietter figure. The consequence was that all factories were very reluctant- to continue to supply the local market at a figure which would not give them the same return as was being tillered on the spot for their butter for export. Conditions were not quite so acute in Auckland, said Mr Leonard. Most of the factories regularly supplying the local market had held stocks sufliciellt to meet the normal demand until the new season'- butter might be expected to come forward in adequate quantities to cover ordinary requirements. The season was proving a little later than usual in most quarters, and some anxietv was being felt whether the stocks available would he sufficient to supply local needs. Should any of the factories he tempted, on account of the lower price locally, to accept nfiors which were being made for export, the local market was likely to go very short, and it was therefore quite probable that an increase would soon take effect in Auckland.
