[Australia A: N.Z. (able Association.] SOLDIER SETTLEMENT LOSSES. .MELBOURNE. July IP. Mr Bruce in a letter to tile Senate I’rcmiers concerning the position ol soldier settlements says the Commonwealth Government after a careful review of the position expressed the opinion that the proper course to pursue was to write olf five million sterling of the loan made by the Commonwealth to the States lor soldier settlement. This would firing the Commonwea I ell’s share of the losses to over ten millions. In all. nearly thirty-six thousand returned soldiers have been settled on land at a total cost ol over fifty-three millions. In many eases difficulties faced these sel tiers but there were sound reasons for the belief that under this huge scheme a substantial hem-lit would ultimately accrue both to the soldiers and Australia.
RUNS AMOK. SYDNEY, July IP. A. Moore, a warder at Callao Park Mental Hospital, ran amok at his home m Rozelle. He attacked his wife with a hammer, severely injuring her head. Mrs Hawkless and Air Stanley I leekenberg went to her assistance. and they were also severely battered. Moore then committed suicide, cutting his throat with a razor. A SAVAGE ATTACK. (Received this day at 8 a.in.) SYDNEY, July 18. Following a quarrel between David William Cole and another youth at AYoollahra- the father complained to the police that his son had been attacked by young Cole. Tlie police advised him to proceed by summons and he left the police station in the early hours of Sunday morning. Afrs Cole, aged 5-1 and daughter Sadie, 21, heard knocking at the door. They went downstairs and opened it and wore savagely attacked by a man with an iron bar. who battered their heads. They were sent to the hospital, iKitli with compound fractures ol the skulls. The police later arrested the father and son. SON SHOOTS FATHER. SYDNEY. July 20. Daniel Henry .Tames Murray -IS. a labourer who is believed to bn resident of Surrey Hills. Sydney, was shot dead at Albury. and his son Henry William has lieen arrested on a charge of murder. Family troubles are alleged to I*s the cause of the deed. SEAMAN’S PROPOSAL. AIELBOURXE. July 20.
A new factor which has been introduced into negotiations for the settlement of the shipping trouble, is a request on the part of representatives of the seamen’s Union that a special tribunal should lie constituted to deal with future disputes and problems of the shipping industry. It is understood the proposal will he placed before the owners when the parties meet to-morrow. It is expected the proposal will be met by a definite refusal, the owners holding that the propel tribunal already exists in the Arbitration Court for the settlement of disputes .
