LYONS GAOLED.
FOR NINE MONTHS. [I)Y TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, July 3. A charge against Noel Lyons, the young Australian seaman, of failing to obey an order for deportation, issued by the Attorney-General oil May 2Gt!i last, was heard in the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon. The rear of the Court was crowded, the majority of the onlookers being watersiders and seafaring men. The prisoner pleaded guilty. The Magistrate said: “ You appear to have made up your mind to flout an order which is the working of the law. No Court can stand for that sort of thing until the Act is repealed. The only person who can upset the order is the Attorney-General himself. 1 consider that no Court lias the power to override the order. I regret that you do not accept the opportunity of acting in compliance with it. I have one duty to perform. 1 must do it. You know what the consequences are. Are you prepared to use the opportunity if given to you now ” Lyons: “ I think that it is only drawing the matter over. 1 consider-
ed it long ago.” Tho Magistrate: “ Very good I You will he convicted and sentenced to nine months' imprisonment with hard labour.” Noel Lyons, tho young man from .Melbourne, alleged to be the leader in the “ham and eggs” trouble on board tho Union Coys’ steamer Manuka, is stated to have had a large quantity of I.W.W. literature found in his posses sion. The town of Bluff had been placarded with this literature. When the Captain refused to alter the menu. The accused had induced the men to go slow. NX'lit'ii the crow were re-engaged at Wellington, Lyons was excluded. He caused further trouble. Being deemed an undesirable, he was ordered to leave New Zealand. He refused to leave. Tile .present proceedings were then taken. Lyons was given another opportunity to leave. The Magistrate gave him a final chance. Lvotis again refused, and was convicted and sentenced as stated.
