SUNSHINE; AT NELSON. NELSON, June 22
Nelson maintained its reputation for mid-winter sunshine last week when for the period, the bright sunshine recorded averaged over eight- and a quarter hours a day. On two days there was B.J hours sunshine. and the lowest reading was 7 hoars 55 minutes.

At a meeting of the City Council last evening the By-l.aws Committee rceoinmiuled the granting of the application by the Provincial Council of the Licensed Trade lo erect hoardings in various parts of the city byways, in reply to the prohibition placards now displayed. After a long discussion the Council referred the matter back m the Committee. WAR LORD CASE. AY HAT IS A LOSS. WELLINGTON. June 23. At the conclusion of the hearing of evidence in connection with a claim IT .£2(150 sterling insurance alleged to bo due in respect to the schooner War Lord, stranded at Waikokopu, Justice Ostler said it seemed to him that all that plaintiff had proved was constructive total loss. The War Lord had not ceased to be a ship. The only point then was the meaning of the policy when it referred to “absolute total less” to be which he thought the ship would require to he a complete wreck.
JUDGMENT FOR DEFENDANTS GISBORNE, June 23.
In the War Lord case Mr Lusk for the plaintiff submitted the evidence showed the vessel will he so badly damaged as not to justify any action being taken to refloat her. He contended the owners were irretrievably deprived of the use of the vessel lor the purpose for which slic had formerly been used. Ilis Honor said il was clear the vessel had not ceased to be a ship and that the owners had not even lost the use of it. Their giving notice ol the abandonment did not alter the position. This being so flit* plaint-ill's could not succeed and must lie lion-suited with costs.
