MOTOR REGISTRATION
THE YUMBER, PLATES. WELLINGTON. Juno 18. Representatives of motor interests •Hid local bodies throughout the Dominion met at Parliament buildings this morning to discuss tlie question of motor registration. Subsequently con*' crete proposals were made to the Minister of Internal Adairs, and Hie Departmental view in defence of tho present registration system was advanced. Tb ■ ( pinions of the various interests rep re-ell ted at the conference were co-ordinated at a brief meeting prior to tin' interview with the Minister (Mon. K. F. Bollard) and submitted to the conference for consideration. The four main questions were as follows:-. (1) Are annual number plates to be '•out inned ? (2 1 Arc plates to have local letters? CD What, is the most suitable colour for plates to make them easily identified ?
CD Ts it feasible that a plate can be permanent and have some addition, such as the year, to indicate that the requirements of the Act have been fulfilled ?
“It is clear.” said Air Bollard, “that H local letters are used it- would be necessary to have annual plates, as an owner might- and would in a great many cities change his address, in which case local letters would lo quite useless, even for the purposes of inquiry as to the state of the roads. A person cannot be prohibited front changing his address, and it is not practicable to issue new plates ill eases onlv where a person has changed Ills address. If local letters are to lx? adopted it would certainly not lx> practicable to have a letter in respect of each local authority. What system could, therefore lie adopted •> It is feasible to divide the country into districts. such as postal districts, highway districts or provincial districts? If there is to he a new plate each year the colour will vary. The present colour of the plates is due to the fact that it was the only colour available.’’
