BENEFIT FAIR.

The Big Fair at the Soldiers’ Hall yesterday in aid of the funds of tho Beautifying Society drew a very good attendance in the afternoon, hut the expectations in regard to the attendance at night were not realised. In that respect the result was disappointing. though for the nttmlier present, the receipts were very satisfactory, the takings for (lie day totalling upwards to £tjt). Those connected with the management must have worked hard to achieve so good a return. The ladies were very active. There was a. very effective display on tho stalls, both the fancy good and sweet** stall being decorated in a very striking manlier. In addition there was a stand for cookery, a pot plant display. .and tin extensive show of vegetables and produce, where steady business was done all day. the workers

maintaining active operations right up to the closing hours. Patrons also had tho opportunity of lacing served with a dainty tea in the afternoon, and with supper at night, tho arrangments in this department, lacing tasteful and attractive.

A special feature of the day’s programme were the competitions in Highland Fling dancing and elocution f,,r juveniles. About ten entrants

competed in the former and quite a number of children in the hitter, the competition proving of great interest. A trv out took place in the afternoon, and at night the recalls were seen and heard. HIGHLAND FLING. Mr Barrowman of Ruatapu was judge and Pipers Findlay and Davidson supplied tlie music. The following are the results: - Juvenile-, over 10 years :—-N. Gibbons 70, 1 ; M. Cameron and J. Tulloch (13. equal second. 'I here were three other competitors each gaining (‘2 points. Juveniios. umlor 10 years:—G. lunior (!-■», first : P. All the foregoing will receive awards. During tho evening.
