The backbone ol the heat wave in the Eastern stales was broken on Monday by breezes from the Atlantic, the temperature failing as much as forty degrees in live hours. One hundred and forty-nine deaths on Sunday brought the total to over four hundred. Relief also came to the Middle West, hot storms arc doing considerable damage in several States.
