DAMAGE AT oIIAKUNK. OIIAKUNE. May 25
Elmill damage in Ohakune borough includes two bridges demolished, and two seriously danviged. the mad washed away tor two chains and a large subsidence at the approach to the bridge cm the main road to Kaetihi. The estimated damage is two thousand pounds.
A heavy Tms laden with passengers had a miraculous escape Irom being engulfed in the road subsidence. The ’bus had barely passed the spot when the hole opened and a youth on il hievclye fell into but was extricated without much difficulty. Rain continues, keeping the rivers high.

CHRISTCHURCH, May 25
Late on Saturday evening detectives | arrested two young men on charges ol | hurglarv. The detectives were on watch , in the vicinity of .Johnston and Smith’s premises in Kilmore Street, when they noticed two suspects hanging round m the street. In the Magistrate’s Court j this morning Leo .lames McGowan, and, Alexander Johnston Mcßae, were remanded on a charge of being rogues, and in possession of house breaking implements. McGowan and Edmund j Harrington M'ard wore remanded on a. charge of burglary. FIRE BBIGADESMEN CHARGED. M'ELLINGTON. May 25. Two tire hrigadesmen. Alec. Mulane. aged 21. and Bernard Dynan, 32. were charged at the Court to-day with the theft of goods valued at LI 15s from the premises of Edward McDonald dining the recent lire. They pleaded guilty ami were remuiuleil for sentence pending the probation officer's report. After tlu> fire the accused were left in charge of the premises and subsequently it was found that goods valued at Ll 3 IGs were missing, and the goods valued at LI 15s were traced to their possession. Counsel for the accused said the men saw some material lying on the floor wet and damaged so they took it to use as a covering for their shelves in their room at the tiro station. It was a case of sudden temptation and there was no secrecy about the allair.
GREYMOITH COURT CASES. GREYBOFTH. May 25. Thomas Christopher pleaded guilty this morning at the Magistrate s Court to the theft of goods valued at about c-)0, the property of his employers. C. Smith. Ltd. The Magistrate saidjie took into account the prisoner s war service and no previous convictions and admitted him to probation tor two veals. Christopher was ordered to pay L2D Is restitution within six months. Frederick James Thomas, a draper, pleaded guilty to receiving stolen goods and was dealt with similarly. ayoman” KILLED. TIMARU.
