GLOAMING.
WINNING RECURD—£I2,3O4
(Lyttelton Times.)
Gloaming has had some hard races during liis notable career, as well as many easy ones, and the Challenge Stakes at Rieearton on Tuesday was the second occasion on which Atr G. D. Greenwood's wonder horse had frightened away all the opposition, making it necessary for a stable mate to he started, in order that his owner could secure the full stake attaching to the race. TliOi first case of the kind occurred in the Haw.era Stakes, when only Vespucci opposed him. It was not only Gloaming, of course, who stood in tho way at Rieearton this week, for the two-year-olds. Chignon and Nincompoop, were also in tho field, and their reputations, gained in Australia in the spring, had an influence in inducing owners of other horses to choose Faster programmes which did not include a visit to Rieearton for the Challenge Stakes.
With the race restricted to his own horses. Air Greenwood was able to add an extra £IOO to Gloaming’s record earnings, as with only two starters the champion was entitled to third money, in addition to the winner’s share. Gloaming did not race as a two-year-old, but lie made a start early in bis three-year-ohl season, his first effort being a. runaway victory in the Chelmsford Stakes at Sydney Tattersail’s spring meeting. Tlis record to date is as follows: Go starts, no wins, nine seconds. He was once unplaced, when lie fell at the start of the North Island Challenge Stakes, his last race as a tlnee-year-ohl. t The stakes earned hy Gloaming now total £12,301, which is easily a record for this part of the world. Gloaming pulled up as jaunty and fresh as a two-year-old after his race at Rieearton this week, and in spite of his nine years there seems no reason why lie should not last for some time vet, under the care of his renowned trainer. R. J. Mason. It has been decided to send him to Hastings early next month, to take part in the Hawke's Ray Stakes, six furlongs and a half, and the J. 1). Ormond Memorial Gold Cup, one mile. This trip will complete his racing for the present season. As to his programme afterwards, no information is available. It is well known, however, that R. J. Mason is always anxious to avoid spending the winter months in New Zealand, and if he makes liis customary trip to Australia this year, it will he no surprise if Gloaming; goes with him again, with a view to being on hand for another spring campaign in Sydney, provided the horse stands up to the necessary work.
