CORRESPONDENCE.

MAYORAL ELECTION.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Seing that it is being freely circulated that I shall bo a candidate for the Mayoralty at the forthcoming election I feel called upon to allay any misunderstanding. I certainly have had many requests to stand for the higher office and numerous promises of support which I appreciate very much indeed, but up to now I have made no definite statement to anyone. After giving the matter most careful consideration 1 am reluctantly, compelled to decline nomination at the present time. I might point out that 1 serve the public in a professional capacity and although a dentist may be called “ a necessary evil ” he is often looked upon by many as a useful member of the community providing he is at his post, and with due regard to the old Yankee adage “ Don’t bite off more than you can chew ” I feel that at the present time I could not devote the time to the mayoral office which it should and would demand of me. I

will, however, again be a candidate for a seat on the Council and 1 hope to have the honour of continuing to serve in that eaapoity as I have done for tho last eighteen years. Again expressing m.y thanks and appreciation of the many promises of support should I contest the seat and thanking you for your valuable space. I am, etc., IT. AL COTJI/SON.
