Tlio traditional characteristic (>1 “East Lynne’’ was well demonstrated at the Prim ess Theatre on Thursday night, when, despite rain and wind, a crowded attendance was present to witness the picture, presentation of a modernised version of the story. Incidentally, also, the story was Americanised. and robbed of the English countryside atmosphere. It was rather more than modernised, for the author took many .liberties with the plot. Chief of all, the familiar ending of the story was recast, and presented almost as an anti-climax to the more familiar, and moving ending with which Mrs Henry Woods’ masterpiece finishes. In that respect the version was disappointing. The photography and general presentation were good, the lighting efforts being novel and telling. Truly ‘‘East Lynne’’ is a. stage classic when the very name can draw so large an attendance under adverse weather conditions.

No doubt there will he a demand for the sections. as visitors from Christchurch have from time to time expressed a wish to acquire sites in the locality o I Lake Kanieri for holiday vacations and week-end jaunts. No doubt many local folk will he disposed also, to take up residential plots in such pleasant surroundings, which will he made more popular still ns liaureka grows in public favour. The real value of Lake Kanieri as a scenic asset to the district is not vet fully realised.
