Mr T. Irvine M.A.. formerly headmaster of the Hokitika District High School who lids been appointed beadmaster of tile Clyde Quay School, in succession to Mr \\ . 11. L- l'oster. M.A.. 0.8. F. (retired), lias arrived in Wellington. At an informal gathering of the School Committee on Thursday last, and teaching staff, Mr Irvine was cordially welcomed, and the wish was exressed that his sojourn in Wellington would he pleasant and profitable.

Word has been received by the Mayor of Grcymoutli (Mr W. H. Parfitt) that the Railway Department has now decided that Mr Jack Steel, against w hose transfer to Canterbury, representations were made, is to remain in Greymonth.
In connection with the Mutt Borough town planning, an invitation is extended to competitors to supply designs for the laying out of the eastern portion of 'Lowor Huft. Premiums of £2OO and £SO will be paid to the successful competitors.
There was a break in the Borough water supply yesterday as a result of a. slip at McKay’s Creek on the Kinder! bake road, two lengths of pipe .being carried away. Repairs were effected late last night, when the supply was turned into the reservoir. The water was made available to householders in limited supply during the morning.
The Hokitika correspondent of the Grey “Argus” states--It is understood that the plantation of exotic trees on the Ross road, near Rimu has failed latterly to ionic up to the Forestry Department's expectations, the Oregon pine plants especially having fallen away to such an extent r.s to prove that diier ground i.s nciessary than that ill which these yearlings were planted. On Rimu Flat, where the ground is drier, hotter results are expected.

“Is it a habit id' yours to go into a hotel and accept the hospitality o a mail without returning the compliment ?” asked Senior-Sergeant McCarthy of a witness in a licensing case at G:eymoutli Magistrate's Court yesterday. “No it is not a habit,” replied witness, “I lit when I rsk a man in for a drink, I don’t expect a man to return it." ‘‘Perhaps not.” said the Senior-Sergeant suavely, “but a man would feel unapplied to return the drink. If he didn't he would he a Jimmy Woodser.” “Not at all,” expostulated tlie witness, “that i.s not what you call a Jimmy Woodser. A .1 mime Woodser is a mail who drinks with tlie Hies.” But Senior Sergeant McCarthy was the last fo score with “Ves, a man who wouldn’t ieturii a drink would soon have none hut the Mies to drink with." 'The crowd in the body of The court laughed last and longest.
At the Magistrate’s Court, at Greymouth yesterday. Edward Watson was charged with negligently driving a mot or vobi’ lc non -s Cobdmi Bridge on March 23rd.. last, as a resnl.l'of which lie knocked down a boy named Isaac Bitching, who was rilling a bicycle on the bridge. After bearing lengthy evidence, Air Alcltlrum S.M. stated the evidence was a little contradictory. The question was whether Watson turned .sufficiently to the right to avoid the hovs on tli<‘ bicycles. ’I here was nothing to show that lie had done so. Defendant had stated that the hoy. Bitching had swerved into the motor lorry, but that statement had not been corroborated. The evidence for Hie prosecution had shown that defendant had swerved into the bicycle. His Worship held that defendant was responsible for the accident by Hi t swerving "sufficiently to the right to avoid a collision. Defendant would be convicted and fined £ ; > in respect to the offence, and was ordered to pay the sum of tlO to the hoy. Bitching, for bodily <1 milages.
