In tlie ITouNC of Commons, replying to questions, lit. Hon. W. Churchill, (Chancellor of tlie Exchequer) said lie was anxious to announce the Government's decision on the question of the gold standard at the earliest date, hut it would he impossible to deal with the matter before the me—. Ashed whether he thought the uncertainty of the Government's intentions in this matter acts as a deterrent to trade. Mr Churchill said he had received some eomnimih ations from various trade organisations, pointing out the evils of prolonged uncertainty. The Government was endeavouring to discharge a difficult duty with regard solely to the general interest, and it was exercising the utmost vigilance in studying the situation.
