WESTLAND COOL STORAGE & DAIRY COY.
FROZEN PORK INDUSTRY
With a view to further demonstrating the possibilities of the iroKen pork industry to farmers of Westland, the management of the Central Factory obtained some 60 pigs killed on the farms from several outlying districts, namely AVataroa, Harihnri, Waitaha, Hokitika, Kokatahi. Koitcrangi, and the Teramakau settlement. The carcases were collected by the lorries, taken to the factory, where they were frozen and then railed in a specially insulated truck supplied by the Railway Department; to Canterbury. At Belfast the full consignment arrived in “ first class ” condition, and top prices were received for the full number. The manager states the farmer will receive about G.Jd per lb free of all charges for his pork. That these prices are to lie received by producers at this period from districts so widely scattered and distanced from the factory must lie considered very satisfactory indeed, and should stimulate in
no small measure the building up of the coming industry for Westland. It is very gratifying to all those interested to learn the initiation ot the new industry has met with such excellent results, and it is wortny of mentioning, the Managing Director (Mr If. T. Parry), to whose exertions the project i.s due, seems to he able to accomplish much he forecasted some two years ago, during the early stages ol tlie formation of the company.
