THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES

Deterioration. Sido by side with this remaking ot our material life and material world, has gone a marked change which I for one do not hesitate to say is not n change for the hotter in many of our intellectual, emotional and religious interests. That there lias been a sharp decline in religious faith is perfectly obvious; and that that decline has manifested itself in the loosening of the hold of certain fundamental principles on the conduct of individual men, and through their loosening of then hold oil the conduct of individual men, they have loosened their hold on the conduct of nations, seems to me plain. That we are for the time being at least—let us hope, not permanently—so immersed in the immediate, in the present, that the power and habit of reflection have almost disappeared among us. —Dr. Butler.
