AGRICULTURK EDUCATIONAL NEEDS. WELLINGTON, March 16. Important evidence on agricultural education and research was given lielore the Board of Agriculture by Professor S. I’ercn, Professor of Agriculture at Victoria. College, Wellington, prolessor Peieu urged that instruction was needed hv specialists with a broad outlook, for a mere University degree would not help the industry, for a proper type of training was necessary as well. There was great need for more research in the Dominion. and this should he done in the agricultural colleges a.s much as possible. The research staff of the Government l.aboiuites should be closely associated with such work. Regaiding colleges anil farm schools in the North Island, not more than one college of university standard was necessary. He would like to see the various centres pool their funds am! ensure the establishment of a strong institution. Failing that, he advised: “Use your money for research stations.” For a location, he favuured Penrose Farm, Masterton, against Momma Farm, Levin, as the former, while good sheep country, also nun adaptable to dairying. He said £10.600 was the least for which the college could lie established, and the Minister’s estimate of £60,000 was nearer the mark, tinder present conditions. There should he one college in the North Island and one in the South Island and Lincoln College should he brought to the standard of the North Island institution and serve for the South Island.
