MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
GREYMOUTH, March 9. Olive Chapman pleaded not guilty to a charge of obstructing the police in the execution of tlieir duty. Senior-Sergeant McCarthy stated that on the evening of February 14, at 10 minutes past 10, Sergeant Fryer went to the Railway Hotel. The defendent stepped in front of the door and delayed his entrance. At the same time she called out, “ Here’s Sergeant Fryer, ho. quick.” According to the Sergeant a number of men bolted out of the hack door. The accused was the wife of tho licensee.
Tho Magistrate stated that the evidence for tho police showed that Airs Chapman in calling out said “Sergeant Fryer is here.” It was really a oucstion of whether he could believe the evidence of the police that an attempt was made to give warning. This evidence was clear, and Airs Chapman admitted using these words. Ho must hold that an obstruction was caused. <V fine of £1 with costs was imposed. UNREGISTERED FIREARM.
Neol Peat, of Afoana, was charged with having a rifle in his possession for more than seven days without having it registered. A fine of 5s with costs was imposed, and the weapon confiscated.
