“Hon W. E. Massey is improving steadily and is doing very well,” said the Hon- A. D. M’Leml at Christchurch. on Thursday, when asked if he had any later news concerning the Prime .Minister’s health. Mr M’T.eod said he had seen Mr Massey at his private house on Monday morning, hut he had not heard how he had been getting on since then. On L riday night, alter his visit to the Aorangi, Mr Mas soy was suffering from stiffness of the joints, hut the next day he was a good deal better. Mr Massey was not yet able to attend meetings of Cabinet, but lie was dealing with a small amount of Ids business at his home, where lie also received Ministers, sometimes as many as three at one time.

A circular letter was received by the .Marlborough League from the Publicity Board of the Tourist Department. asking for the assistance of Pro gross Leagues in endeavouring to secure an improvement in hotel accommodation in view of an expected influx of tourists next year. The Department mentioned as a case in point that a party of 400 Americans would he vis.iing the Dominion. The meeting agreed that hotel accommodation in Blenheim compared poorly with that in some other centres, Kaikoura being quoted in this connexion, and the view was expressed that pom- accommodation often prevented travelling. The suggestion was made that a syndicate should he formed to take over one ol the existing hotels and rebuild it or modern lines, hut nothing definite was done in the matter.

Sir dames Parr speaking of Mr Frank Tate (Director of Education in I ic-tor-in) now on a visit to Xew Zealand said that -Mr Tate was an inspiring speaker. West Coast people were delighted with his courtesy and good nature. Alihough he was engaged on a specia' and restricted mission, he gave severa addresses on the West Coast on cduc-a tional subjects of local interest. He had the ideals of the new education, but lie was practical. His loot- were on the earth, lie was not, like some educa ticnfalists, up in the clouds all the time. He was helpful to teachers, whom he addressed at refresher courses at Nelson, Westport and Grcymouth. and they were enthusiastic in showing their appreciation. It was very gratifying til find a leading Australian educationalist like Mr Tate willing to give teachers and parents of this Dominion the benefit of his ripe experience and culture.

Writing of the Blenheim races oil Thursday a correspondent says that an evenly balanced field of seven saddic'd no for the Marlborough Clip, hut the public fancied Viewpoint, who carried more money than his performances justified. Happy Days got a knock hack at the start that settled his chances, Sunbath was )4ie first t' reach out and led past the stand trom Prosperity. Kalakaua and Viewpoint, hut the field soon dosed up. Stream put in a run after covering a mile and at the entrance to the straight was leading Prosperity and Viewpoint. In the run home, however, Kalakaua, who had never been too far hack, came with a rattle and heat Stream by a

head in the last few strides. The winner is probably at the top ol his form. Stream ran a nice race, hut Viewpoint and Prosperity were disappointing. The last-mentioned was in fourth place. According to the public Big Push, now owned hv Mr IV. Jeffries, hail only to start to win the Summer Handicap, and he was hacked accordingly. The race, however, was not run his way. Prince Charleroi streaked out of the barrier and ran the field off their legs until well into the straight, where he gave wav to Crown Star. Marble Bar and Big Push, who finished in that order ahead of him.. The favourite had every show but the pace was too hot for him in the early stages, and he had not enough in hand to finish last.

A statement of his policy in regard to granting tenants on leasehold lands the right of obtaining the freehold was made by the Hon. A. I). M’Leod. Minister of I.amls, in reply to a deputation of small innholders on the Cheviot Estate who asked him on Thursday for the right of the freehold. The .Minister said the deputation should he well aware of his attitude in connection with the freehold generally. He had always been a staunch supporter of the freehold tenure for a great deal of the lands which, in the North Island especially, were at present held as endowment lands. “It is my intention during the coming session.” Mr M.’Leod added, “to give Parliament an opportunity of deciding whether these tenants should have the right of the freehold.” In regard to the .areas in Cheviot and elsewhere which were held as small grazing runs, while he believed the freehold to he the best tenure, he was not prepared, without further investigation of the position as regards these leases, to sav definitely wheter they would he included. Greater safeguards than existed at present would probably he necessary in regard to prevention of reaggregation of such areas. The future freehold policy would he a small holding one. and without proper safeguards in this respect he was not prepared to make a definite pronouncement. but sneaking ns Minister of Lands he wished to make it clear that he was strongly in favour of the freehold tenure as being the best.

There is to he a committee room, a ladies’ dressing room, and a gents’ dressing room, with a front entrance, hall-wav and roomy passage. The cost of the work in sight is £350. being the first section of the front to complete the full club room quarters. Arrangements have Ik-oii made for the supply of the timber. and building operations are to begin in a fortnight’s time. '1 he Club will he glad of all possible assistance in gifts of any kind. With the active assistance of the. ladies it is hoped to have the work carried out quickly and the ready co-operation of the public with financial help will be of the greatest assistance.
