IMPORTANT APPOINTMENT,

WELLINGTON February 27

An important appointment is pending in connexion with the Trade and Produce Department of the High Commissioner’s Office London, and it is expected that a selection will shortly he made of a man to take charge of the duties.

Although the functions of the Trade and Produce Department in London will not impinge upon the operations of the meat, dairy produce, honey, and limit control Boards, and to that extent are somewhat circumscribed, there is at the same time a considerable amount of detail work to attend to in buying and arranging for the delivery of stores for the Public Works, Post and Telegraph, and Railway Departments, as well as local authorities. The scope of the duties of the officer to he appointed will embrace the placing and shipping of orders on behalf of Government Departments and local bodies, reporting to the Stores Control Board in regard to prices of materials and stores, and the trend of markets, and subject to the control of the High Commissioner generally acting as English haying representative for the New Zealand Stoics Control Board. He will also deal with enquiries regarding the industrial development and the import and export trade of the Dominion.

OFFICE SAFE ATTACKED. AUCKLAND, February 27. When the head office of Ambury’s Ltd., was opened by members of tbe staff this morning it was discovered that thieves had broken in during the night and made a bold attempt to rob the safe. Entrance had been gained by forcing a side window. The thieves had used explosives oil the safe, hut- without effect. They must have become alarmed after the explosion for they decamped without removing anything from the office, tn any ease it is stated that the safe last night did not contain .suffis ienL money to have rewarded the burglars for their enterprise even had it been successful.
