A fire occurred yesterday morning at 2.30 at Otira, when the store and dwelling belonging to Air Joseph A\ illiams were both completely destroyed with their contents, the loss being a total one. Air Williams was at the time absent in Christchurch, while Mrs Williams was at Avoea, where there is another store belonging to the same proprietor.

A few minutes helore noon a fatal accident oceurod on Saturday in the Cross Cut Section of the 'Liverpool State Colliery, the victim being Air John Knox, of Rewnnui, a man about o 3 years of age, who belonged formerly to. Green Island. Otago. His working mate. Air C. H. Hughes, aged about 37> years was at the same lime severely injured. The cause of was a fall of pillar coal, over one hundred tons, and Knox was obviously, killer! instantaneously. Leing buried .so that it took over three hours to extricate the body. Hughes was also caught, and narrowly escaped death, sustaining severe cuts on the forehead and face, as well as a sprained inkle. The men had regarded the place as safe, and the fall came upon them ma-t unexpectedly.
