The tourist traffic during February was rpiite above the average. The number passing south last week was a record for this time of the year.
On Saturday morning coal was struck in the incline shaft of the Dobson Coal Company and was proved during the day to a depth of several feet. The fuJ depth of the seam will take some days to determine.
The sundial donated by Mrs \V. IT. Shannon of ltevell St., to the memory of her father, who died lately in Christchurch, lias now been erected in Alaeandrew Square. The work has been well carried out by -Mr H. A. Thompson. and an interesting ornamental addition to the grounds is the result.
Car troubles on the south road were a feature of minor floods in that locality last week. The. Dry Creek crossing was chiefly responsible, due to the soft bottom, where the live sand proved a trap for both motor car and lorry. Some unpleasant experiences resulted, and there was a hold up in the traffic for a time.
The weather for the week-end was of an unsatisfactory nature. On Saturday morning there was a light rain, with further showers in the afternoon that stopped outdoor fixtures. The night was fine, hut early on Sunday morning rain again commenced to fall and there was a steady downpour at intervals during the day, preventing anv outdoor activities.

A complaint was made at this office on Saturday in regard to conveyances not noting the rules ot the road, an accident, being narrowly averted in Weld St. from this cause. The matter is of great importance with the ever increasing motor traffic, hut in many instances it seems that the motor drivers seek to hold all the rights to the road, and their consideration of those of the horse-drawn vehicles or cyclists is ol tile most meagre nature. Each party has its own remedy, and their complaints should he taken further if they desire to improve present, conditions.
Timber,orders, particularly for riinu, are very scare just now. T his is attributed, not to a dearth in building, hut to tin* increased import of oregon. It is calculated that to produce in red pine the quantity of oregon imported into the Dominion last year, some sixty mills with an output of 20,070 weekly could he employed. It, would appear that the importation of timber is likely to have on milling the same effect as the importation of coal is having on coal mining—creating a; continuous dearth of employment in a, very important avenue of industry.

Enfield Lodge, a well-known Christchurch training establishment, was com i Jet My desfi'oyed by fire early Friday evening. The building, which was situated oil the Alain South Road, near Sockburn, was occupied by Air A\ . Bryce, a well-known trainer of trotting horses. The stables, which were some little distance from the house escaped with damage. The building was an old one. and it was quickly consumed by the flames. There were no fire-fighting appliances available, and the locality is outside the fire brigade area. There was CSOO insurance on the house, and C2OO on the furniture, both insurances being in the South British office. A strong gale was blowing at the time of the lire, and as the property was old and very dry, it was quickly consumed by the flames.
Mr Brock. chief inspector of the Canterbury Education Board on Friday announced that in a low mouths lie would he retiring from the service. During his connection with the Inspectorate he had received nothing hut kindness at the hands of the teachers in Canterbury. The high standard of primary education in this district was. in no small measure, due to the loyalty with which the teachers had hacked no the inspectors. He urged them to have in mind continually that theirs was a noble calling, one that .called for the best effort from the best type in the community. They were fortunate to be citizens in “ Clod’s Own Country,” and it was their duty and their privilege to educate the children along sound paths, that would develop a race worthy of the country in which they lived.
