THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
Standing by St. Paul's
“Londoners feel about St. Paul’s what the old Romans felt about the Capitol—while stands the Capitol, Rome shall stand. There would he a superstitious shiver run through the Empire if any disaster happened to St. Paul’s and all who use the English tongue would say—and not. without justice— that those who let St. Paul’s perish, when they had been gravely warned of its danger, had wretchedly failed in their trusteeship. St. Paul’s belongs not to London alone, hut to the Empire, and it is not unlikely, when the position is made known, that help will flow in generously from the Dominions and the Colonies. It would lie a pleasing thought that they had contributed towards the restoration and strengthening of the main piers of St. Paul’s just as on one occr.sion the jealous, disunited cities of Greece sent contributions to the repair of a :lanious temple which was equally venerated by all who spoke the longue of the Hellenes.”-“Daily Telegraph.”
