The sum of £34 IS od. being the amount of “excess unauthorised expenditure” demanded by the Controller and Auditor-General, lias been paid out of their personal estates by the .Mayor and Councillors of Christchurch. The money was refunded to the District Eund of the City, and the AuditorGeneral notified. Four Councillors bad to pay L2 Os (id each and thirteen members £2 Os od each to make up the amount.

The little Wanganui river below tho old road lord lias been eroding the bank again, and overflowing, threatening to do some further damage, and being a menace, in iact. to the La Fontaine country behind. As the safety of the Tiiter-AVangamii Settlement is jeopardised b.v the vagaries of the river it would bo well for the authorities to look into the matter in good time.
A very pretty wedding was solemnised at the Roman Catholic ( iiurcli. Aluiura. on Wednesday. l lie Rev. Father Fogarty being the officiating clergyman. ’I be contracting parties were' Miss Marie Alison, of Palmerston North, and Air Samuel Lee, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Lee. ol Kumara. The bride’s gown was of apricot maroeaitt, with bat and siloes to match. She was given away by Mr B. (lough, of Bhickwatcr. and was attended by Miss M. Gough, niece of the bridegroom. The bridesmaid’s dress was of cream silk, with hat to match. Mr M. Gough acted as best man. After the ceremony a reception was held at the residence of the bridegroom’s sister. Mrs B. Gough. Blackwater. where the wedding breaklast was served, l ater in the day Air and Mrs Lee left bv car for Hokitika, the bride travelling in a mole costume with hat to match.

The meeting then closed with the usual chorus. You often hear the croakers complaining about the hard times in Hokitika. Yet Westland paid £ll3i in amusement tax last year. This means that £227-10 was spent in amusements. The total fees charged the patients at the Westland Hospital were less than Yet the people who used the Hospital have not paid half tin* amount as yet. Now the Lord loves a cheerful giver, and we are certain lie loves a cheerful payer ol his just debts. So good people owing fees get to it.
