THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
Tub New Mood Or The Nations. “All over the world the sinus ;uid symptoms of political and economic convalescence are nnmistakeahle. In every continent there is visible a definite swinji towards settled order and constructive stabilisation. The period of chaotic despair and anarchical indifference appears to be ncni'ing its end in all parts of the earth. The tendency to resort to violence and force seems to have spent its momentum. Kverywhere the tide of revolution is ebbin<i. .Mankind is in a conservative mood. It is more anxious to conserve than to destroy its resources.
“Great is the opportunity of all Governments, and especially of our own. The people expect them to make bay while the sun shines on credit ami confidence and enterprise by redressing the evils of our social systems. The workers must have houses. The slums must he swept awiit. The problem of high prices must he investigated. The burdens of the taxpayer must be lightened. The root causes of discontent must be dealt with. The old order has got a new lease of life, ami it must prove its capacity by showing that stability does not mean stagnation.” •—“Dailv Express,”
