[Reuters Telegrams.] BUTTER AND CHEESE. LONDON, Feb. y. The butter market is steady, and there is a good demand, considerable quantities going to the Continent. Danish is firm at about 2125. Germany is buying steadily. New Zealand choicest, IASs to IGOst Australian. 1 18s to 150 s; unsalted about 14s premium, owing to a temporary shortage through scarcity of Argentine, as a result of drought. Cheese is firm. New Zolnnd, ols to 90s; Australian, 90s to 925. THE OPIUM EVIL. GENEVA, February 7. In view of the development already known, the American delegation has withdrawn from the Opium Conference. This withdrawal is the sequel to the difference of views as between the British and the Ameriaon delegations. The American delegation proposed a scheme hv which they contended that the opium traffic would be ended in ten years. The British delegation pointed out that the American plan would not prevent smuggled opium, ft declared that the crux of the whole matter was China’s failure to prevent an increase in opium growing. Britain proposed that the traffic should be ended within a period of 15 years, to date from the time that China should begin effectively carrying out the Hague Opium. Con-
vention. Attempts to reconcile the British and American viewpoints proved unsuccessful. The absence of the Chinese delegation from the plenary session of the Second Opium Conference is interpreted as meaning that the delegation has withdrawn from the conference. The President of the Conference read a letter from the Chinese delegation, announcing their withdrawal, on the ground that, as no undertaking had been given to suppress opium smoking in the Far Eastern territories, the delegation considered that no good purpose would be served by its farther participation in the Conference. BACHELOR BIRDS. LONDON, February 7. Miss Turner, lecturing to the Camera Club, after spending seven months’ lonelv vigil on the bird sanctuary island of Scoßhcat, advanced the theory that bachelor birds congregated together. She had discovered that all the male oyster catchers which had not paired during the mating season went and occupied a separate section of tlio island. PORTUGUESE BOMB OUTRAGE. (Received this day at 9 a.m.) I.ONODN, February fi. A cryptic message from Lisbon states that during a demonstration outside the Ministry of the Interior a bomb was exploded close to the Town Hall, which is near the -Ministry, hour persons were wounded and some damage done to the building. The troops wore called out to disperse the crowd. BRITAIN’S TERMS. LONDON, February fi. The " Daily Telegraph ” states that a British Note has been despatched to Paris, and it is understood that itbriefly sots out the principles upon which Britain will expect France to offer repayment.
