CATTLE BREEDS
Slatistics in regard to breeds of cattle, horses and pigs have now been tabulated, and arc published by the Statistician for general information. The most noteworthy feature of the 'tabulation is the increase shown in dairy breeds. This is. of course, the outcome of comparative market values, beef breeds being less profitable than dairy. The following table gives a rough comparison <;f the two, last seasons in respect of which information in regard to breeds is available: Purebred—

Four years ago the number was 337.259; last year there were 313,107. The figures are published by the Government Statistician with a classification, hut comparison is not- exact, as full details are not available for 1921. The number of thoroughbreds was then given as 91G<, but this figure included many trotting horses. For 1921 the returns showed 7i2G9 thorougnbreds and 3547 trotting horses. There were also 101,083 hack or harness light horses and 57,501 spring cart or light artillery horses, making with trotting horses 105,731, as against 171,133 in 1921. Draught horses, including tin eoquartcr draught, totalled 132,062, ns against 14G.311. There were 9432 ponies under fourteen hands, as compared with 10,048 in 192].
