Richard James Pnsoii. watersider, was sentenced to fourteen clays’ imprisonment for stealing a bottle of whisky from an over-, seas’ steamer. It was mentioned that there was sickness in the accused’s family, and he had taken the spirit for medicinal purposes. NELSON GAMBLING CHARGES. NELSON, January 20. William Alexey appeared on remand at the Court to-day, charged with using premises in Trafalgar St., known nt a fruit and confectionery shop, as a common gaining house. Soni T-Seigeant Barrett asked for a remand, as accused’s solicitor was away. Other charges, he said were pending, one against a person lor allowing the premises to he used as a common iganv ing house, and a further one against another person for alleged bookmaking The accused was remanded until February 9th. the same bail being allow- ' ed. AYAH INK'S ROUGH TRIP. STEERING GEAR DAAI AGED. CHRISTCHURCH. Jan. 27. The ferry steamer AVahine arrived at Lyttelton two hours late, having been delavod by a fierce* southerly gale, which disabled the steam steering gear. The vessel was hove to for nearly an hour off Cape Campbell Light. The hand steering gear was then brought into action and the AVahine proceeded. The passengers say it was a very rough trip.

ROADMEN BURNED TO DEATH. BLENHEIM, Jan. 27. The police have been advised by the constable at Soddon that AA illiam Kane and Valentino Mitchell, roadmen, were burnt to death in their whare at Blind river. Kane’s body was found amongst the debris. Mitchell had crawled across the road and was found badly burnt, face down ill the ditch. There are no further particulars.
