CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.
Tho Canterbury Education Board met at Christchurch on Tuesday. Present: Messrs If. J. Bignell (chairman), AY. A.. Banks, G. AY. Armitage, E. 11. Andrews, C. S. Thompson, AY. Johnson, T. Hughes, J. G. Gow, AY. P. Spencer, R. Wild, AA'. H. AVinsor. APPOINTMENTS, Appointments confirmed included:— Greymouth, Aiiss E. A. Muniing, assistant mistress; Aiiss K. Rvan, assistant mistress; Hokitika, Aiiss M. E. Bell, assistant mistress; Jack’s Mill, Air A r . Satherley. headmaster; Runanga, Aiiss 0. AA'. Newport, assistant mistress; Teramakau, Aiiss E. Davison, sole teacher: AVaiho Gorge, Aiiss E. J. Donovan, sole teacher; Wataron, Airs AT. A. Corcoran, assistant mistress. Resignations accepted included: Hokitika, Mr Ai Seebcck, assistant master; Ln Fontaine, Aiiss E. J. Donovan, sole teacher; Woodstock, Aiiss G. Aitken, assistant mistress. It was resolved to draw the Depart- , merit’s attention to the disgraceful conditions under which the Harihari school children are being accommodated, and that if the matter is not remedied at once, the Board will be compelled to ask the member for the AA estland district to bring the matter before Parliament at its next session. Tho report was adopted. BUILDINGS COMAfTTTF.E. It was resolved to expend up to £SO on renovation of two rooms ut Hokitika. Afr AYild to consult with the Committee regarding the rooms must in need of attention. The question of school fence and drainage of grounds was left over in the meantime. A report was received from the Greymouth foreman endorsing tho Committee’s application and recommending the establishment ol a central school midway between Afoaiia and Rum to serve the scholars in these districts. It was resolved to inform the Committee of the foreman’s recommendation and to enquire if the proposed school would meet with requirements,
It was resolved to state, in reply to the AVntaroa Committee’s application for erection of a teacher’s residence tllmt there was no hope of securing a grant for this purpose. The Department advised that School Committees should lie held responsible for damage done, by fire or otherwise during school entertainments, ft was resolved that Committees he notified accordingly. In this connexion it was decided by the Board that the. Board should write to the Department pointing out that entertainments were held for the purpose of raising funds for the schools, and that it was the duly o( the Government to perform its part; also to point out that there was' every possibility that the Government would have to take over further responsibilities il the committees ceased to raise monies. The .Manual and Technical Committee recommended that as many ol the members of the Committee as could find it convenient to be present, together with Messrs J. Moodie and R. Grant, lie appointed to interview Air Frank Tait, Director of Education in Victoria, on bis visit to Christchurch, regarding the co-relation of the various branches of agricultural education.
