HUGHES’ RESIGNATION
DAWN OF NEW i:HA. PRESIDENTS LONE I LAND. AUHTUiLIAH AND N.Z. -1 ABI.K ASSOCIATION. / WASHINGTON, January 13. Political observers here predict that the resignation of Mr Hughes marks the dawn of a new era in the political administration of the country, wherein President Coolidge will personally lead the Government and na.'vigule the State, as far as possible uncontrolled by factions in Cougreo.-.. Leading Senators here were taken completely by surprise bv the announcement of the resignation, and the appointment of Mr Ke.llog to succeed Mr Hughes, this indicating that they, contrary to all precedents, had not lieen consulted hy the President. Gossips naturally a,re trying to dish up some secret motive behind the unexpected resignation, but up to the present nothing authoritative lias come to light. One explanation is that Air Hughes and Senator Borah are unable to agree and that Air Hughes does not desire to continue in office after Senator Borah becomes head of the Foroign "Relations Committee. Another reason advanced is tlvat Air Hughes is anxious to contest the Presidency in 1928, and that be therefore wishes to devote the next four years in making money in his law practices in order 'to fill his campaign chest. If it true that President Coolidge desires to cut free from Senatorial entanglements, he is now in u position to do so, and observers look forward to four of the most interesting years with a President largely following his own course in public affairs, while at the .same time leaving Congress to a great extent untroubled by bis advice. POLICY CHANGES DENTED. WASHINGTON,! January 13. "Except for Secretary Hughes and Secretary Gore (who leaves the Department of Agriculture on Alnrc.h 4th to become Governor of West Virginia) no changes are-expected on that date in the Cabinet. At the President’s request, Secretary Davis has withdrawn his resignation from the Labour Department. A statement issued at White House says that there is no substances in. the report that the change in the cSc-r<-tary of State would lead to a. niodilication of the foreign policies followed by Afr Hughes. The policy of nonrecognition towards Russia, would remain unchanged so long as I - conditions in that country remain as at present.
