The Secretary reported that the thanks ol of the Board were due to the Racing Club for the assistance given.
From Inspector of Police, Greymoutl? in reference to a complaint regarding; the apathy of the police at Hokitika in dealing with n call for help against a patient, stating he had found the sergeant at Hokitika had not acted as promptly as lie should have done, cuing to an accident the same night, and that the patient referred to should have been prosecuted for mischief as the case was a serious one. That in luture he would see that the matron ol the Hospital receives prompt assistance li'oiu the police in dealing with .similar cases. That in reference to complaints made of llm lack of assistance by the police in locating two men, that he htld ascer-
tained on enquiry that the cases against these were purely for debt by way ol civil proceedings, and therefore not a matter for him to deal with, and the Board should address their complaint to Mr IV. Received, The Chairman said there seemed to bo some misunderstanding among the inmates of (lie old people's home. limy seemed to think they were entitled ti Us a month. As a matter oi laet whatever the Hoard gave to the old people was .simply a gratuity, and lie thought that the time had come when application should he made to the sons and daughters of those old people who were imunles to provide payment of some of the cost, of upkeep of the inmates. Air Jelfries said there was a false impression that the Board had been taking what they were not entitled to. Tins was not. so. The Board was culitled to take the whole of the pension when they became inmates. Air Dull' supported the altitude o' the Chairman and Air Jelfries. and Air Davidson said he tliouglit the suggestion of the Chairman was somewhat fiar.sh.
The Chairman moved Unit, the relatives of the inmates be written to asking them to supplement the Board's cost of upkeep of inmates of the institution. Seconded by Air Wells and carried. The Chairman (Mr G. Davidson) ol the House Committee, reported the hot and cold water service was not satisfactory and required attention; that there, were two vacancies and that applications he invite.l for two probationers.—Received and attention to he given. Accounts amounting ii £3bS Is lud were passed for payment. The Treasurer reported receipts £1075 10s 2d, payments 2770 1 Is 2d. credit balance bolt) Lis Bd.-~ Received. In connection with outstanding maintenance accounts the Secretary was instructed to take legal action against those not making regular payments. TENDERS FOR MEAT. Tenders for meat were opened for the supply of quantities as used last year, as follows: Erie James, £559 19s ljd: Andrews Bros. £.575 18s lOd: W. Berry and Son 2577 lbs Old. " Air Blank moved that the tender of Andrews Bros, lie accepted. Seconded by Air Moharry and carried. The Board rose at 9.30 p.n*.
