SEA SCOUTS’ ADVENTURE. AUCKLAND, January ill Scouts cruising in a sailing boat on Sunday afternoon found themselves in danger ol collision with a
ferry steamer and so all jumped overhoard. Their boat shot ahead, just glazing the steamer. They were in the water thirteen minutes before being picked up by the steamer’s crew. One of the younger scouts was nearly exhausted. but the others were not seriously distressed. PORT OF AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND. January 9. The shipping at Auckland last year Was easily a record for the port. The returns demonstrate a great expansion of provincial trade and production. There was a remarkable increase in the number of vessels trading in Auckland
Waters, the arrivals totalling 92(50, as against a total of 18-17 in 1023. This ums an increase of 1-113 vessels. The departures numbered 1)211 vessels, ns compared with 7709 in the previous year, an increase of 1442. On a tonnage basis the shipping increase aggregated over half a million tons. The net tonnage of inward shipping totalled 2.553.722 tons as against 2,219,mw in 1923. this being a gain of 931,107 lons, while the tonnage of the outward shipping amounted to 2,01 9,080, as compared 'with-2,194.080 in 1923. an increase of 321,409 ions. Together, these gains give an aggregate increase ol CSo.oOi tons.

The New Brighton Brigade responded to the alarm and extinguished the outbreak with the first-aid outfit. A limit half ol the erection was gutted. “Wonderland” 's owned by the New Brighton Borough Council. The building contained cleft rival machinery valued at £7OO. There were six new cases yesterday. AUCKLAND. Jan. 11. Three eases of infantile paralysis have been reported this week, one each from Warkworh. llamiltun. and AAaitekaura. The vexed question of women’s athletics was again before the Council of the X.Z.A.A.A. to-night, when a motion that a 100 yards' women’s race he put on the X.Z. championship programme. hut not to count for the championship points, was rejected. The voting was as follows: Ayes: Taylor (Otago); Guy (Canterbury): Lusk and Thompson (Welti ngton).
Noes; McKay den (West Coast); Wilson (Canterbury); Davies < Auckland) ; Connop (West Coast); Taylor (proxy for Otago). Mr Taylor then moved that, for consistencys’ sake, the Council should bar women’s events being held by any centre or club affiliated to the Council, hut the Chairman required notice of motion.
