McLEAN’S PICTURES. o“THE COMMON LAW’’—TUESDAY. Of more than passing interest is the motion picture: “The Common Law,” which is a screen adaption of Robert W. Chambers’ famous novel of the same name. Co-starred are Corrinne Griffith. Conway Tearle and Elliott Dexter, while an exceptional supporting cast includes Doris May, Hobart Busworth, Miss du Pool, Bryant \\ asliliurn. Phyllis Haver. Harry Myers, and Wally Van. The story of “The Common Law” is really that of Valerie West, a sweet and rather unsophisticated young girl, who, suddenly thrown upon her own resources sets out to earn her living, but with no tangible idea i!s to what she is best fitted to undertake. During her search for work she calls at the studio of Louis Neville, an artist, who, seeing her great possibilities as a model, persuades her to pose for him in the nude. She achieves great success as a model, but retains her sweetness and charm in spite of her environment. Neville falls desperately in love with Valerie and she finally returns his love. But the artists’ family is furious at what they deem tin undesirable union and inHtienre Valeric lo give him up hy convincing her that the marriage will wreck his career. She tries desperately to kill his love and nearly succeeds, hut in the end their attachment is too strong and Valeric finally offers to live with him as his common law wife. Neville first refuses, but is finally on the point of accepting Valeric’s .sacrifice of honour when unexpected lories intervene which rush the. story to its interesting and dramatic clime' Comedy, Gazette and Review will conclude this magnificent programme.
