AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. DR PAGE. MELBOURNE, December 13. Doctor Page (Federal Treasurer) is leaving for Canada on Thursday next for health reasons. It is anticipated that Dr. Page will he able to consult the Now Zealand Government on route, respecting outstanding questions of importance to both countries. ENGINEERING WORKS FIRE. SYDNEY, Dec. 15. A fire at the Morts’ Dock Engineering Works destroyed several buildings covering two acres, which were occupied by the pattern store and pattern shop. After a hard fight by tlie brigades and floats the outbreak was confined to this area. Several houses in the vicinity caught fire, hut were quickly extinguished. The damage is estimated at CGD.OOO. It is believed the outbreak was caused by a piece of broken glass in the dried grass round the buildings receiving the sun’s lays. WHISKY WAREHOUSE FIRE. SYDNEY. Dec. 15. Another large outbreak is raging in John Dewar’s whisky warelmti.se in the city. 'The firemen are experiencing great difficulty in coping with the Haines which are fanned by a strong southerly gale.
SHIPPING TROUBLE SETTLED. MELBOURNE. Dec. 14. 'The Shipping Conference has arrived at a settlement of the overseas shipping dispute. Work will lie resumed on all the ships throughout the Commonwealth. All the Court proceedings will lie drooped. The parties will meet again on .Monday, to draft the detailed terms of the settlement. It is understood that the Shipping Labour Bureau at Sydney.* will lie abolished. INTER-STATE SF.AMIvN. SYDNEY. December 14. 'The deck and stokehold hands of the inter-State passenger steamer Canberra, decided, just prior to sailing hour, not to take the ship to sea until their claim in connection with deferred sailing pay was satisfied, and the vessel was tied up. An attempt will lie made to get her away on Monday, hut it is fßared the men’s actions i.s the beginning of a big upheaval in the inter-state shil ping services. •LORD JKLUCOE. SYDNEY. December 15. Lord Jellicoe and family have departed for Melbourne. "The people were desirous of making a public demonstration. but at Lord Jellicoe’s request, they were allowed to leave quietly.
