Tn the House of Coinmoiis Mr Baldwin evoked ironical laughter wlien lie replied in tlie negative to a question as to whether it was proposed to liold an inquiry into the Campbell ease. The Premier contended tlie electorate had given n. final decisive verdict on this subject, lie added in this connection that tli (loverninent had reversed its predecessors’ instructions under wliich the Attorney-General had been directed not to pursue political prosecutions without Cabinet sanctiitn. The present (lovernmeiit held that such instruction was unconstitutional and subversive of the administration of justice and derogatory to the At-torncy-Ooncrars position. Tile opposition leaders protesteil that they only followed precedents, and they asked for an opportunity to discuss the matter after Christinas. Replying 'to Mr I’on.sonb.v, Mr Baldwin stated the (loverninent were communicating with the Dominion flovernincnts, and he hoped to he able to make an announcement shortly regarding proposals for a preliminary
inquiry into the system of consultation on matters of foreign policy, as outlined by Mr Thomas on July 20. Sir Newton Moore asked whether the (loverninent will propose to ensure that such question as maintenance of a. white Australia, shall not he submitted to review by the League of Nations. Mr Baldwin said the Government's policy regarding the Protocol was not yet settled, but questions of this kind were not likely to be overlooked.
