(UT TELEGlUl’il—lT.lt ITtESS ASSOCIATION*. GOOD HARVEST PROSPECTS. BLENHEIM. December !). Tbe saying that -Marlborough never looked better at this time of the year from a farming point of view than it does in tbe present occasion, can baldly be an exaggeration. The October and November rains have done wonders, and in all directions magnificent crops of oats, wheat, and barley have reared themselves above tbe fences, while there lias been an exceptionally prolific growth of peas. AI, tbe crops have attained to prime condition, and there is every indication of a bumper harvest. The oat fields have ripened quickly, and the reapers and binders have appeared on the scene earlier than usual. Here and there oaten sheaves dot the paddocks, and some crops are already in stack. It is not likely, however, that much chair cutting will lie done before tbe New Year. The acerago that was sown with oats tins year appears to be well up to the average, and tbe output of (half should be heavy. Tbe area, under
pens is not so . extensive as it. was in former years, but on present appearances tbe output should largely compensate for tbe reduction in the sowings. Tbe contract prices for peas this season range from os (id to Ids per bushel. Nearly all the barley, too. i.s being grown on contract, tbe ruling price being os tier bushel. Barley growing lias been slackened oil in .Marlborough, giving place in several instances to sheep raising and dairying. There are a limited number of wheat crons, but they piomise great yields. A remarkable feature of tbe season is the sustained growth of grass. Stock are thriving on pastures that have a rare verdure for tbe middle ol sitii'iner. Tbe cows have been luxuriating on an abundance ol feed, trnnslcrring it to tbe butter-fat cheques, and the sheep have been faring so well that record figures are predicted for the I’ieton freezing works. A big harvesting ol grass, clover, and lucerne hay is one of the successes ol the season. On account of the fact that the recent rains delayed both the hay-mnkii-.g and the shearing causing these operations to run together. many ol the farmers have been having an exceedingly busy time.
