M’illiam John Hull, single, 31, a motor cyclist, died in the hospital as the result of injuries received by colliding with a cow on Marshlands Road, on Saturday night. A BODY FOUND. (11l EYAIOL’TH, December t. A body believed to be that of Hcnrv Thomas Oi'hy, a lireman, on the steamer Titoki missing since Alay Kith., was found by two boys last evening on Cobden Beach. December I A new electrical signalling apparatus on the railway between Olira and Alcana was tested yesterday, and is in full working order to-day, and is a complete success.
THE ENGINEERING TRADI M’ELLINGTON, Nov.
The question of apprenticeship orders for the engineering trade throughout the Dominion was before the Arbitration Court to-day. Air Hammond, for the employees, said the Court was faced with the difficulty of preparing a Dominion order from four partial recommendations made by local committees in Auckland. M'ellington. Christchurch and Dunedin. It had been agreed to accept the Otago recommendation subject to certain modifications. It was recommended that the proportion of the total number of apprentices to the total number of journeymen shall be not more tluin two to one in the engineering brunch, and one to one in the moulding and boiler-making branches. The minimum rates of wages to be paid apprentices were recommended to lie:—-First year. 15s a week; second year. 20s; third year. 255; fourth, 3i)s; liftli -Ids. As to technical training, it was suggested that the radius lie left to the determination of the local committees, having regard to local conditions. Provision was made with respect to lost time and overtime.
Application was made to the Court by tin* .Motor Mechanics' Union to have the assistants in the trade brought under the provisions of the Apprentices’ Act. The question of wages was left to the decision of the Court, which intimated its general intention to fix them at the same rates as for engineering upprentices.
SANDERS CUR. C'IIRIS’fTHURCTL Dec. 1. The first of a series of seven trials for the select ('.■liiterhui'.v’s representative fourteen-footer for the Sander's Cup contest was won at Lyttelton on Saturday by the Linnet. There were two other competitors, the Secret and the Rioioi. The race was uninteresting as the result of a varying wind.
