SHIPPING HELD UP. MELBOURNE. Nov. 21. Wool brokers and buyers are alatmod at the prospect of valuable cargoes being bold up at will l.y wharf labourers. "They say if the present policy is continued, the result will he a serious falling off at the wool sales. Brokers state there is a record clip and prices are higher than ever, but il there is anv prospect of wool being held up lor an' indefinite time after it is bought, buyers may refuse to operate, as the deiay will mean a heavy loss of interest. and also that the wool, will not reach the markets in time for the series sales for which it is bought. THE COMMONWEALTH LINE EXEMPTED. MELBOURNE, Nov. 22. The Wharf Labourers’ Federation has decided that all ships of the Commonwealth Line should he exempted from the overtime strike., in view of the line having always employed union labour only in Sydney. The Volmnnia and Clan Monroe are held up in Freenmiitle owing .to the demand, of the crow tor Australian rales. While the steamers are in Australian waters they will not be affected by the decision of the watersiders, hut will remain black owing to the refusal of the owners to concede the higher rates. CONFERENCE ABORTIVE. (Received this day at 11.25 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 22. Tlie compulsory conference of the parties to the waterside dispute .lias proved abortive. The Federation representatives offered to immediately work the Maloja if the Peninsular Company would give a guarantee of preference to members of the Federation in Sydney. This was refused. Mr Justice Powers then referred the dispute to the Court at Sydney.
