The Hokitika Cricket Club is expected to be fairly strong this season, far stronger Ilian lor the past six years, hut there appears to he a likelihood of only one other Club taking the field locally. The Secretary or Marine lias been advised of the expected arrival at Bluff on Saturday of the Norwegian whaler Sir .lames Clark Boss. Iroin Norwav. On arrival at Bluff the vessel is to he met by Captain G. Hooper (representing the Marine Department), the Commissioner of Crown Lands, and the Bluff Collector of Customs. From Bluff the vessel is to proceed to Stewart Island to pick up the whale catchers, left there on her last whaling expedition, and tlienee to Port Coalniers for refitting.

The death took place at I’eeltni Hospital on Wednesday night of Mrs .Richard Straight of Waiuta, after an illness of only two days, from meningitis. 'l'lie deceased was a daughter of Mr and Mrs Gardiner of Waiuta and was only I!) years of age. and up to a few days ago had enjoyed good health, consequently the shock of her death is all the greater. She leaves a little daughter of two years of age as well as a devoted husband, who will have the deepest sympathy of a wide circle of friends. The deceased has eight sisters and two brothers.
What might be considered as a clear definition of “tin healing” was made at the Amberley sitting of the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. A witness in a case of a breach of the peace informed the MngiVtrate that a parly of voting fellows were giving “tin-kett-iing.” “What is that?” asked Mr Wyvorn Wilson. S.M. “Oh von see. when a chap gets married it s the usual thing for him to supply about ten gallons of beer, and you go along for a ‘stun up.’ ” replied the witness. The Magistrate asked: “Are you sure? Surely it means drinking from a tin kettle.” The witness, however, averred that bis definition was the correct one.

The Railway Department announces that the reduced charges for railage of benzine etc., from 3rd. November will apply to kerosene and hitter in consignments of one ton and over will be charged class “B” plus 23 per cent., and lots under one ton at class "A pi us 22} per cent.
