STRIKE EXTENDING. MELBOURNE. Nov. 5. The waterside trouble is extending, other unions now being allceted. At least seven inter-Stnte steamers will be laid up in Sydney and Melbourne this week, thus throwing out of work members of the Maritime Unions. The numbers of returned soldiers and sailors employed by the Shipping Bureau, were increased, following a remit response to a call for more men. The Trolley and Draymen’s Union makes no secret of its unwillingness to be drawn into the dispute. The irritation policy (cabled on 'doth. Oct.) is being carried on, only in a much modified plan. So far gear has been replaced and goods covered at * knocking off time. There has been no reports of go-slow tactics or faulty loading and stacking. At Newcastle, unemployment is also increasing and the coal trade is menaced bv the coal trimmers refusal to work after four p.m. If at the end ot the present week these tactics aic still in operation fifteen collieries on the Maitland field will have to close down, idling 7,500 men. It is reported dissatisfaction exists amonc a number of the coal trimmers 'H over The abolition of the overtime rate of payment till four p.m. which is throe shillings per hour, and after that 4s (Hi. . It is learned from a reliable cjuaitei that a petition has been lodged with the secretary of the Coal Trimmers Union, asking for another meeting to be called to review the position. _ MELBOURNE, Nov. o. There is no apparent weakening in the decision of the Melbourne waterside workers to hold aloof from the overtime strike.
