BT TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSN «t’€6PyfllOHT. # RAI LM’AY ENTERPRISE. Oct. 31. The Railway Department is evidently adopting a new‘policy in regard to the handling of wool. It- was reported to the Rangitikei County Council yesterday that the department had canvassed for and secured nearly all the wool in the Hunterville district, instead of it being carted by road. Tho county engineer stated that while tho farmer may save a little by employing motor transport, the roads are cut about, and instead of making a saving he comes out on the wrong side of the ledger. As an instance of motor damage fliis season it was reported that a heavily laden lorry broke the decking of several bridges in one riding. Tn another case, the carting of 30 hales of wool over 3 miles resulted in £23 worth of damage to the road.
SHOAVMAN ARRESTED. TI.MARU. Oct. 31. AA'hilo on duty at the Tininni Show yesterday, Detective I.e Sueur recognised one of the showmen as a man who was wanted to answer a charge of theft. The theft is alleged to have Ih'cii committed at Te Rata. Hamilton, on April 10th. last. He arrested tho man. whose name was Alexander Johnson Mneßao, and he was brought before Mr D. M’Lonnnn. J.P., in the Timaru Police Court, this morning, and charged with having stolen one lady’s watch, a gold over locket, a leather hand-bag and £1 Ids in cash, the property of Mary Morris. .
On the application of the police a remand was granted so that the accused may appear in Hamilton. AVlien arrested, the accused was trading under the name of M’ilson, as a “one-minute photographer.”
DROWNED. AY ELLINGTON. Oct. 31. At- the inquest on Richard Albert Chidley, a nightwatehman on the steamer Maori, who fell into the liarhour, a verdict of accidental death was returned. The Coroner expressed approval of the conduct ol M i 1 limn Morgan, :t watersider who jumped in and pulled deceased to the wharf. It was, lie said, unfortunate that the man lm( not been saved, hut that was no fault of Morgan, who did till he could umlei the circumstances.
OF NO AYATL. AV ELLINGTON. Oct. 30. The pathetic story of a Chinese storekeeper’s failure to save the life of an ailing child, after having travelled 130 miles in a motor-ear to obtain the host medical attention, was related to the Coroner. Mr Riddell, to-day at the inquest touching the dentil of the inl sint. Doreen -lone.
The father, a middle-aged Chinese named Chan Lit- .lone, told the court in intelligible English, that lie carried on business as a storekeeper at Ohakuuo. Deceased child was about thirteen months old. the youngest of a family of live, and had been taken ill on Sunday last. The child was suliering from a cold and. thinking that teething might he responsible for some of the trouble, the medical man prescribed medicine. On AAednesday morning the doctor advu-ed the child’s removal to the hospital. A\ itness hired a motor ear and travelled to A\ellingtoii, via Tnihape, Hunterville, Marton, Bulls, Foxtoit. AA itness replied that he though! there were more doc tors in A\ clliiigton whose services would he available il re-
quired. Coni inning, witness said that the in fant had cried occasionally during the trip, but on arrival at the hospital wa found to he dead.
The* inquiry was adjourned itnlil to morrow afternoon, when medical evi deuce will he heard.

The police statement showed that the accused had been stealing from shops for some time, much properly, valued at L'oO, being found in her possession. Accused, it was stated, went, into shops with other girls. One would make a purchase, while others helped themselves to the goods.
