AUCKLAND CASES. AUCKLAND, Oetoher 20. At the Supreme Court Lena lllaziua. a married woman, was charged with extortion at Waipu. R. X. Nitz a gumdigger, staled that at a church bazaar he and the defendant’s husband tied in guessing the length of a piece of string. In the deciding trial he (Nitz) won a tea .set. Tho accused later wrote a letter, making

an allegation against Nitz’s character, and threatened exposure, unless tho tea set was reluriled.

Justice Ilerdinan, after hearing tho evidence, instructed the jury to bring in a verdict of guilty. He formally sentenced the accused to twelve -J--nmnths’ probation, staling sentence would he eam-elled if the Court of Ap|H?al decided that no crime had been committed, the legal question being that the accused extorted a tea set not for herself hut for the committee.

Hugh Plunket Ross, aged 23, was charged with carnal knowledge of a girl of 15 years and I months, at Waihi. lie was sentenced to twelve months’ reformative treatment.

Whaiigo llarawa. charged with indecent assault, was found not guilty.
