LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. WELLINGTON. October 23. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 today.
The New Plymouth Harbour Board Empowering Bill, the South Invercargill Barough Wards Validating Bill, and the Auckland Harbour Board Loan and Emnowering Bill were reported from the. Local Bills Committee without amendment, nut through their fin;il stages and passed.
The Motor Vehicles Bill was read a second time, and alter the committee stage progress was reported and leave
given to sit again. The Poultry Bill, the North Shore Borough (Auckland) Water Supply Bill, (lie Auckland City Abattoir Bill, (he Petone Borough Street Bill were put through their Tinal stages and passed without further amendment.
The Council rose at 1.2 till S p.m. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House met again at 2.3 ft p.m. STONEWALL CONTINUED. In the House the whole of the day and night sitting was occupied in discussing the short title to the Gaming Bill, supplemented by motions to report progress. WELLINGTON. October 21. At midnight Mr Hockley took the chair and immediately began to give drastic rulings on subjects of “tedious repetitions ami irrelevancy.” The speakers then experienced sonic difficulty in steering clear of the chair. At 12.35 p.m. Mr Xosworthv rose to a point of order and took the opportunity to reiterate the position of the Government. They were, he said, going right on and those opposing the Hill must take the responsibility for causing the expense to the country. At 1 a.m. the speakers having exhausted (heir reasons why progress should he reported a division was taken. The motion being lost by 33 to 11. After some further brief remarks by Mr Sullivan on the short title a division on that section of the Bill was taken at 1.15 a.in. when the clause wa s added by 2!) to 11. The Committee then proceeded to discuss clause 2, which authorises the issue of 31 additional permits. At 5.35 a.in. Mr Wright moved to eliminate tho word, “hunt” with a view to limiting the terms trotting and racing clubs. Argument proceeded very much in the nature of a circle, until 8 a.in. when the Committee adjourned for breakfast until o.3ft.
