Vt’ESTLAN I) COMMITTEEMONDAY, OCTOBER 20th. The Westland Committee met at 7.35 p.m. Present:—Mr T. AV. Bruce (President), Dr. Teichelmaiin, Messrs \V. Jeffries, A. G. Pilkington, C. S. Dalgleish, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans, and J. J. Mclntosh. Apology was made for the absence of Messrs W. J. Butler and J. Morris (lion. Secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, and the outward correspondence was approved* Front Fox Film Coy., notifying tho camera man had been recalled to New York and fresh arrangements would ho made later for a visit to Westland.— Received.
From Canterbury Progress Longue thanking tho Committee for support to the Lyttelton tunnel duplication question. From N. Z. Railways giving particulars in respect to the proposed school excursion to Arthur’s Pass as follows: The proposed time-table for the school excursion Ross-1 lokitika to Arthur’s Pass was based on tho assumption that no stops except lor train puvrpose.q would ho made after leaving Hokitika. The. accommodation will ho limited to 12 ears, carrying approximately 500 to GGO passengers. J-eave Boss G.iJO a.m.; Hokitika 7.25; arrive Otira 11.35; Arthur’s Pass 12.15 ; Leave Arthur’s Pass 12.15; Otira 3.15, arrive Hokitika 7.35; Ross 8.30. Fares, children under 10 years, from Boss 3s 9d; Hokitika 3s; senior scholars, ss; -Is 3d; public Gs 3d; and 5s Gd. The number who travelled to Miihinapua. n 1921 was 909; in 1922, 9GI; and the number who travelled to Ruiuinga in 1923 was 1992.—-Received, 'flic Chairman stated the information would be useful for the proposed .schools excursion, to Arthur’s Pass when the local School Commttec arranged to have the matter discussed at a public meeting called for the purposo. The Chairman reported in fuller detail of the interview with the District .Traffic Manager, and stated the Department- was going into the question of speeding up the Saturday connection with the Midland service.—Received and the hope expressed the matter would he dealt with satisfactorily. The Chairman reported in regard to the visit last week of Mr W. R. Hayward, connected with the Dunedin Exhibition, and hoped tho district would give every possible support to tho proposed Exhibition. Dr. Tcioholmann favored doing all the district could to advertise the place. Tho hotel accommodation of the town should ho increased to cater for holidav travellers.
Mi- Jeffries said tho hotelkeepers had done well last Christinas in providing extra accommodation. A hotter tenure was necessary for licensees if hotelkeepers were expected to go into a large outlay. The Chairman mentioned the matter of establishing a kiln-dryng plant on the Coast. It (Was resolved tio cue quire further into the matter, and Messrs Butler, Pelham and the Chairman were appointed a committee to enquire into tho question. 'Phe matter of reading in Eolith ■Westland was mentioned, and it was resolved that a special committee, (ousmting of tbe President, Dr. Teir-hol-molltt, and Messrs Mclntosh and Piikingtou. he set up to go into the matter with the authorities with a view to advancing the project in concrete form. Mr Jeffries moved that further represonrations be made regarding tho necessity for Oknrito harbor—Agreed to. Dr. Teichelmaiin reported an advance copy of the new booklet to advertise Westland was expected this week, and the publication would he issued as soon as possible. The meeting concluded at 8.15 p.m.
