The whole of the buildings at the Hokitika racecourse are being painted, the three stands and other structures receiving attention. A good deal of the fencing is to he painted also, and there is already a marked iiiipioveinent ill the general appearance of the buildings and grounds. The death of Mr John T). Christie, following on an operation for appendicitis. which took place on Wednesday at Dunedin Hospital, lie was wellknown nil the West Coast, where lie resided for many years, a portion of which were spent in the service of
Messrs McMahon and Lee, auctioneers. Beeflon, and also with Mr J. Fogarty and Coy., Clreymouth. When Messrs Dalgety and Coy. Ltd., opened their flreymuutli branch, Air Christie took charge, and remained in the firm’s emplay until about six months’ ago. when he moved to Christchurch and joined Hie firm of F. If. I.ahatt and Co. Ho was a prominent supporter of the Star Club and was a member of the Greynioiilh Bowling Club. He leaves a widow and one daughter, who reside in Wellington, and one* son. who is a pupil of St Bede’s College. Christchurch.

Two maternity accounts to the amount of 012 were passed for payment and two candidates wore initiated into the rites of Druidism by A. D. I!ro Kearns and his officers. Four new members were proposed and highly recommended. The meeting then closed with the usual chorus.
