The police report that in their search for Hie missing Douglas Mawson women, they travelled right across Arn-lti-ini island, but found no trace whatever of tie* while women, nor did they see many blacks. The Aboriginals apparently were well aware of the approach of the police and the nature of their mi-sion, and so disappeared so mysteriously. Some of the police consider the .search will produce nothing. They say the country traversed in pursuit of tin* blacks is extremely dilliciilt. A BIG FIRE. BRISBANE, October 12. DOUBLE TRAGEDY. BRISBANE. Ootolior 13. A tragedy occurred near Maryborough. The details are obscure. Charles Bavldon. 3S, and Myrtle Moore, sixteen, wore engaged to he married. Later the girl refused to marry, though Bavldon continued friendly. The girl was staving with a relative. Bavldon called at the house this morning with a motor lorry, stating his mother wanted to see Myrtle. They drove away together and nothing more was scon of them till the evening when it was reported to the police that Bavldon bail shot himself, in the lorry, where they found him fatally wounded. He died shortly after. On lifting a tent Hy in tho vehicle, the police discovered the • Oily of Myrtle- Moore with a terrible gasii in the neck and the head shattered. She had apparently been dead for some hours, Bavldon was a returned soldier and suffered from shell shock.
