The State Sawmill at Donnelly’s Crossing, u lino up-to-date mill, which lias been running for about two years was closed down last night. Nothing is known a.s to the future of the mill, or whether it will he sold to private enterprise or pulled down. There arc still millions of feet of timber available for cutting in close proximity to the mill. It is not known why it lias been closed. It is a distinct loss to tho district, as tho monthly pay-out was £3OOO.

ROW IN A RESTAURANT. NAPIER, October 11

A cowardly assault was perpetrator on Saturday evening at a restaurant in Napier, in connection with which David Davis, aged 23: and George Edgar Casey, aged 21, were arrested. It is stated that Davis and Casey went to Paxie’s restaurant for tea. They asked .for a cork screw, which was refused. When they finished their meal, they created trouble over payment. Andrew l’axie, in ejecting Casey, fought him in the street. The fight was continued in front of the restaurant, and Casev was either knocked down, or fell down It is- alleged that, when J’axie stood hack to allow him to rise, Davis came from behind, and hit Paxie over the right eye, rupturing the eyeball. I’axie was taken to the hospital, where liis eye was removed. Casey and Davis will appear before the Court on Monday.
