Gloaming’s defeat in the Hill Stakes was the result of had luck, and caused much disappointment. Holding a good position at the top of the straight Gloaming got blocked when making, his run at the 1/egcr, and ho had to ho eased up. lie lost ground. Ballymena, making the most of tin* opportunity, dashed to the front. Gloaming, getting clear, made? a great effort to retrieve the position, hut was beaten by half a neck only, in the time of 1.38 1-1, which equalled the course record.
